What it's worth

Compare it to the day rate, not to software

You already know what it costs to bring a consultant in for a day, and you know what it costs to scrap a shift's worth of parts and run the job again. Those are the two numbers to hold this against.

Phil is not a replacement for either one. It is what the second-shift process tech reaches for at 2 a.m. on a Saturday, when the consultant isn't coming and the answer is somewhere in a binder nobody has opened in four years.

Straight about the limits

What Phil is not

It gives advice about machines that run hot and close under tonnage. So it is worth being plain about this up front:

  • It is advisory. A qualified person decides what happens on the floor.
  • It can be wrong — especially where your documents are silent, out of date, or contradict each other.
  • Its engineering values are rules of thumb that vary by grade and geometry. A starting point for a setup sheet, never a substitute for a mold trial.
  • It has no connection to your machines. It cannot change a setpoint.
